There are a few exceptions to the 7 business day turnaround. Pre-1970 USCG DD214’s are located by reference to the service member’s Coast Guard Serial Number (dog-tag number). If you do not have this number, the process will be slowed down by several days while we search for the USCG Serial Number as a preliminary step. If you have a common name, this process can be challenging.
In general, older records take slightly longer than more-recent records. Pre-1955 records are considered “archival” records, and these can take a few days longer than Post-1955 USCG DD214 requests.
The Coast Guard began digitizing military personnel files in 2005. If you served in the USCG after 2005, you may have a digital DD214. These take a few days longer to access than a traditional, paper copy of the DD Form 214. Digital copies can usually be accessed within 7-10 business days.
