There are a few exceptions to the 7 business day turnaround. Pre-1970 Army DD214’s are located by reference to the service member’s Army Serial/Service Number (dog-tag number). If you do not have this number, the process will be slowed down by several days while we search for the Serial Number as a preliminary step. If you have a common name, this process can be challenging.
Army Reserve National Guard records can take longer than Regular Army records. However, if you were activated, then your records will be classified as federal, Regular Army records, and the 7 business day estimate will apply.
Finally, many Army records for service between 1915 and 1960 were damaged or destroyed in the 1973 fire at the National Archives storage facility in St. Louis, Missouri. These records can be considerably slower to access, and in some cases, if the entire Military Personnel File was destroyed, they can be impossible to expedite. If this is the case we will process a full refund, minus our search fee. For more information on the 1973 fire, you can check out the entry on our FAQ page.
